Improved existing lean manufacturing processes with increased visibility of enterprise wide data |
"Of all the Supply Chain solutions we looked at, we believe Oracle has the best solution for us. Our manufacturing and supply chain processes were already lean and cutting edge, so we were looking for software that would support our existing lean processes and help us gain needed visibility across our entire enterprise and at the same time scalable to accommodate our fast paced growth." - Claire Huan, Business Analyst Manager, Marvell Semiconductor Corporation
Whether you appreciate the high technology products or cutting edge designed electronics, Marvell Semiconductor Corporation offers a complete line of switches, transceivers, power management, storage, wireless and broadband products to enable major products -- more than 700 to be exact. Marvell's award-winning designs are used by many major OEMs and suppliers in their own products.
It follows that Marvell's careful attention to design and functionality is borne out of an equally carefully considered manufacturing approach. Marvell follows a lean manufacturing process, an outsourced methodology that continuously seeks to eliminate waste, thereby utilizing the use of outsource partners to lower manufacturing costs, lead times, inventory requirements and increase supply chain velocity.
In recent years, Marvell has experienced tremendous growth and hit the 1 Billion Dollar mark in just its tenth year of existence. Through multi-source suppliers and subcontractors in US, Israel, Asia and Europe, and launching new product lines, including wireless components, "the past 5 years were really big years for us as far as growth activities," said Jeff Jones, IT Director of Marvell Corporation. "With all this growth, we knew we had to make a decision concerning our enterprise supply chain solution. We couldn't just as we currently did with our manual reporting."
Although its manufacturing practice was already lean, Marvell wanted to gain better visibility across its eight manufacturing companies in US, Asia, Europe and Israel, and move to a single global single instance for its supply chain, manufacturing, order management, and financial data. "We needed a system that could not only handle US operations but also handle our multi-plant, global multi-national enterprise," said Jeff. "We went looking for a software solution that would support our organization and grow with us as we improve our processes."
From Lean Manufacturing to Lean Enterprise and High Speed Supply Chain
Marvell uses a highly automated system for guiding its supply chain and manufacturing process. Through the use of "B2B" -- Marvell employees can tell quickly where they are in a manufacturing cycle at any given time.
Despite its emphasis on having rapid near real time data on its manufacturing cycle, the company lacked visibility into the enterprise as a whole. "Without an adequate supply chain planning tool our system was so limited and couldn't see beyond one facility," Claire said.
One of the key benefits Marvell has seen with Oracle Advanced Supply Chain Planning is the ability to unify scheduling across all its facilities. "Previously we had to schedule each manufacturing plant independently of the other. Now we have everyone on the same platform, so we're able to see information more easily without requiring everybody to log out of one company and log into another," Jean Wout Sin - Business Systems Analyst for Asian Operations.
Better Tracking of Fabs and Subcontractor Accounts
Another benefit Marvell reaped from moving to Oracle Advanced Supply Chain Planning -- is the ability to quickly and easily track Fabricators and Subcontractors. "We felt there was a better way to handle the subcontractor and multi-national transactions than the way we had been doing it using manual reports" Timothy Soon Cheong Aw - Snr. Supply Chain Planner Asian Operations.
Under its old reporting system, Marvell received daily EDI updates and prepared multiple reports on a daily basis. Now the planning team can stay up to date within Oracle ASCP the system automatically tracks all changes in supply chain activities. "Oracle allows us to have a daily snapshot of our manufacturing transactions. Previously, we didn't have this data until the end of the day," Jean said. "Before we were only able to look at manual reports daily, now we can look at data 24x7 & real time data."
Claire is already anticipating long-term gains from the solution. "This is particularly useful to us for future analysis of what our procurement dollars and cash position is at anytime," she said. "And it will definitely help with budgeting as well, because sometimes the end-of-the-month costs don't necessarily reflect what happened during the month."
Why Enterprise Resource Technologies (ERT) and Oracle ASCP?"
Of all the providers, we believe Oracle has the best lean manufacturing and supply chain solution, and ERTechnologies were the providers to implement it better than the other competitors particularly to integrate OSFM" Claire said. "We were lean before we purchased Oracle ASCP, so we were primarily looking for a solution that would support our existing practices. Also, as we continuously improve, we want to be able to tweak the system to adapt."
Implementation Process
Working with Enterprise Resource Technologies, Inc., Marvell brought its system live within 12 months, beginning with several of its facilities and plans to bring on line its far flung operations in Europe and Israel live. " ERT was very involved in bringing our first instance live, and we handled the remaining organizations ourselves.
ERT played an important role in providing on- and off-site training to Marvell employees. "We were very excited that ERT was willing to provide training right in our offices. We find this approach much more valuable in increasing our knowledge base and improving our processes going forward," Claire said. "
We have been very happy with the level of support and cooperation we've received from ERT with regard to employee training," Claire said. "Our employees are even asking for additional, more detailed training sessions to take our applications to a whole new level."
Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Marvell Semiconductor Corporation is a publicly traded company that manufactures and supply transceivers, storage, gateways, broadband, wireless, power management products to OEM manufacturers. |

"When we looked at all the Supply Chain solutions, we believe Oracle has the best solution for us. Our outsourced manufacturing and supply chain processes were already in place and we wanted a cutting edge solution to match the current capabilities as well as improve intelligence and collaboration between us and all our partners. We wanted a software that would support our existing processes and help us gain transparent visibility across our entire enterprise internally and with our ODMs and at the same time be scalable to accommodate our future growth."
- Ger Purcell, Chief Information Officer, Gateway Computers
The world appreciates the high technology products and cutting edge designed electronics that Gateway Computers offers through a complete line of laptops, desktops, workstations, computer components and accessories that are supplied directly and through multi channel global network of distributors and suppliers. Gateway's award-winning designs are used by many consumers, major corporations, government and education institutions worldwide.
It follows that Gateway's careful attention to design and functionality is borne out of an equally carefully considered outsourced manufacturing approach. Gateway's methodology is to create internal designs and use an outsourced methodology that engages a core of lean manufacturers (ODMs) that continuously seeks to eliminate waste to lower manufacturing costs, lead times, inventory requirements and increase supply chain velocity.
Gateway has experienced tremendous growth during the fast growth PC years and hit the 1 Billion Dollar mark in just its eighth year of existence. Through multi-channel suppliers and ODMs manufacturers in US, Asia and Europe, and launching new product lines, including display components, "the past 10 years were really big years for us as far as growth activities," said John Goldsberry, SVP & CFO of Gateway Computers. "To continue to grow and compete, we needed to establish a more robust and transparent, high speed enterprise supply chain solution and communicate on a collaborative basis with all our partners."
Outsourced Manufacturing with Enterprise Intelligence and High Velocity Supply Chain
Gateway uses a complex network of highly automated system to guide its supply chain and manufacturing process. Through the use of "B2B" - Gateway employees can tell quickly where they are in a manufacturing cycle at any given time.
Despite its emphasis on having rapid near real time data on its manufacturing cycle, the company lacked visibility into the enterprise as a whole. "Without an adequate supply chain planning tool our system was so limited and couldn't see beyond one facility," Sin Radovcic said - Director Of Supply Chain Management.
"Gateway has realized some key benefits with Oracle's Advanced Supply Chain Planning, Demand Planning, later migrating to Demantra and Inventory Optimizing across our DCs and ODMs -we now have the ability to unify scheduling across all our facilities. "Previously we had to schedule each ODM and product line independently of the other. Now we have everyone on the same platform, and so we're able to see information more easily."
Better Tracking of ODMs and DCs
Another benefit Gateway reaped from moving to Oracle's APS modules (ASCP, Demantra, IO) -- is the ability to quickly and easily track ODMs and DCs. "It really paid off because it was a better way to handle the (ODM) Manufacturers and DC transactions than the way we had been doing it using manual reports" said Elaine Maio- Supply Chain Manager Notebooks & PC Asian Operations.
Why Enterprise Resource Technologies (ERT) and Oracle Consulting
"We decided to use Oracle over other software because it had the right solution to manage the ODMs and provide deep extended supply chain solution. ERTechnologies had the insight to the solution we wanted and worked alongside Oracle Consulting to implement it better than the other competitors particularly to integrate Inventory Optimization and Demand Planning and then migrate to Demantra with the functions we wanted" said Sin Radovcic.
Implementation Process
Working with Enterprise Resource Technologies, Inc., Gateway brought its system live within 12 months, beginning with several of its US facilities and plans to roll out its operations in Europe and Asia later. "ERT was very involved in bringing our first instance live, and worked with us extensively to handle the remaining organizations afterward".
ERT played an important role in providing on-site training to Gateway employees. "We were very excited that ERT was willing to provide training right in our offices. This approach was much more valuable in increasing our knowledge base and improving our processes going forward," Sin Radovcic said.
"We have been very happy with the level of support and cooperation we've received from ERT with regard to employee training" Sin Radovcic said.

"With this kind of growth, we had to make a decision on how best to optimize our current operation and allow us to grow for the future, we couldn't continue just as we currently did with limited manual reporting."
Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing with Intelligent Supply Chain
Despite the efforts to initiate a Lean Manufacturing Six Sigma program with real time data, the company still lacked visibility into the operation as a whole. "Without an adequate supply chain planning tool our system was limited and couldn't see the total manufacturing process," said Mike Brownell - Operations Manager.
Better Tracking of Suppliers and Inventory

"We felt there was a better way to handle the material movement and manage suppliers than the way we had been doing it using manual reports" Theresa Holloway - Purchasing Manager.
Now the planning team can stay up to date with Oracle Supply Chain as the system automatically tracks all changes in purchase material and production usage activities. "Oracle allows us to have a daily snapshot of our purchasing and production. Previously, we did not have this data anywhere except in manual reports until too late" Theresa said. "now we can look at data daily and in more real time."
Theresa anticipates long-term gains from the solution. "This is particularly useful to us for future analysis of what our procurement dollars and cash position is at anytime," she said. "And it will definitely help with budgeting as well, because sometimes the end-of-the-month costs don't necessarily reflect what happened during the month."
Why Enterprise Resource Technologies (ERT) and Oracle Supply Chain?
"We had Oracle Financials, Purchasing and Inventory already installed but needed an upgrade to integrate manufacturing, planning and intelligence.
